Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden at Monkey Marsh bridge near Thatcham on the Kennet and Avon canal and is a replacement for the twice muggled Monkey Marsh Lock cache.

The Kennet and Avon Canal is a navigable waterway crossing southern England from Bristol to Reading.

The canal, completed in 1810, passes through a rural landscape, over chalk vales and river valleys. It winds its way through villages, market towns and the City of Bath.

The waterway is a thread linking many architectural and engineering triumphs, including aqueducts, pumping stations and lock flights. It is a combination of three waterways: the River Avon to the west, the River Kennet to the East, both of which are linked by fifty-seven miles of man made waterway.

You can park at the station at N51 23.639 W001 14.595 and from there it is a shortish walk to the cache.

You will walk past one of only two remaining turf sided locks in Britain. The sides of the lock are not clad with brick but slope up from the canal bottom to turf sides. This requires more water to operate and so most locks of this kind have been upgraded to brick sided locks. The other remaining example, Garston lock is also on the Kennet and Avon canal near Theale.*

There is a good towpath all the way to the cache and there are no stiles to lift your dog over.

The cache is a small plastic box containing some small swaps.

This cache is 1 of 36 caches hidden along 19 miles of the Kennet and Avon canal between and Thatcham and Great Bedwyn via Newbury, Kintbury, Hungerford, Froxfield and Little Bedwyn.
