Geocache Description:

Terrain is easy but watch for hidden holes

Be very carefull leaving the main road, watch for speeding traffic when you turn !!!.

Procede down a country road, the pine forest has been cut over, leave your car on the road. Respect the forest when you enter it.

Follow the remains of a track on foot a short distance toward the main road, until you find a hole, what lines it ?, and what is in it now ?
Note the dropoff is dangerous and we would not hide it in there.

Please make sure you return the cache to its hiding place as locals (children I assume) have plunderd the cache occasionaly

The Cache is a clear watertight container

The History
The army built it during World War 2 as a fuel dump for the RNZAF, it was steel lined inside the bricks, with a cover over the top. It was complete with its own loading docks, and a railway siding. It was one of 17 such facilities built in New Zealand.

The locals used to have parties in it after the war until the army blew the lid off it. This lid was largely to hide the dump from the air

There are other building remains from this complex in the area.
The fuel was used for aircraft landing on the grass runways at Te Parita, a mile away which are still visible.
This field was one of a number of airfields in New Zealand designed for dispersal of B17 aircraft in the event of a Japanese invasion.
The British considered landing Jet aircraft there after the war, as the local sealed runways were considered too short. This idea was abandoned as the grass runways for jets, although long enough, were not considered safe.

I am researching more on the place, so contact me if you have any history on it
