Geology Geocache #11: Pleistocene Polish Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Dirtsqueezer1: Cache was either swiped or destroyed. I'm bagging it for now. It is still worth the drive up here to see the geology, even if you don't get a McToy for the payoff. Cheers.

Geocache Description:

An ammo box located at the Cap Sante view point in Anacortes.

This cache was inspired by a trip to the Cap Sante Lookout cache hidden by Fundriving. I couldn't resist placing a geology geocache here after finding the other one, which is fairly close to mine.

This cache is another tribute to the glacial activity of the Puget Sound Region. Apart from spectacular views, this cache features glacially scraped and polished rocks, so marked about 10,000 years ago during the last significant glacial episode. Pay careful attention to the rocks near the parking lot. At that location are some prime examples of marks from the nearly 1 mile thick glacier that once covered the region. Careful observation will show that the striations (scraped lines in the rock) and slight swales are aligned in approximately a northeast-southwest direction, giving us an indication of the direction of glacial movement. Such marks are known as "paleo-indicators"; clues and evidence of the nature of past activity.

Original contents of the cache are a tribute to that which is wonderfully maleable (i.e., silly putty and play doh).

Ample parking is available a very close distance to the cache.
