To complement my Devizes
cache, I have placed one near Chippenham, as there is a Chippenham
near Devizes in Wiltshire. And heck, it's a lovely spot, too.
The cache is located just off a footpath that runs through
Chippenham Fen Nature Reserve - the cache is outside of the barbed
wire fence and outside of the reserve, but you will not need to
climb the fence - you can walk around it (see
here).
The Nature Reserve is an excellent place to search for rare
beetles.
The reserve is the only place in Britain where the rare
Gyrophaena pseudonana (in October 1967) and Gyrophaena
rousi (on the fungus Polyporus squamosus in June 1999)
beetles have been found.
If you're lucky, and have a wander around the reserve, you may see
the 4 Asian Water Buffalo that have been introduced as a natural
alternative to strimmers for keeping the vegetation under control.
Be aware that the Reserve is in a shallow peat-filled valley in the
fens, and is thus VERY VERY boggy, even along the marked footpaths.
Wellies are advised, especially in the wetter months, and children
might need carrying (or will get very muddy!).
The cache is a standard green ammo-box. It's not far from the
footpath, but shoudn't be found by passers-by as the footpath is
fairly quiet. The hiding place is a good kilometre or so along
footpaths, so lazy cachers will have a bit of exercise coming!
The original cache contents were:
- An official log book
- DVCAM Pro video tape
- Corus Puzzle
- Geocache Pencil
- S VHS Tape
- DVD of "Clarkson Hot Metal"
- Geocache coat patch
- 2 keyrings
- A badge
You can easily park in Fordham, but a better approach is from
the south, as that takes you through Chippenham Fen itself. Please
make sure to hide the cache well after you find it.
Happy Hunting!
