Geocache Description:

Please ignore the above positions, they only tell you this cache is located somewhere on Vancouver Island or the surrounding area. This is a COMPLEX cache. It contains over $1000.00 IN CASH, a BRAND NEW GARMIN 76S GPS UNIT AND CASE. A BOOK "GPS MADE EASY" by Lawrence Letham, an AURORA HEADLIGHT, A PAIR OF BUSHNELL 8 POWER BINOCULARS, A MINI LEATHERMAN TOOL, CD'S (by Serial Joe, 2 CD's by NSYNC, The
Corrs, Aimee Mann, Jessica Simpson and the Backstreet Boys, a $150.00 PELICCAN WATERPROOF CASE and MANY OTHER GOODIES. In fact there is so much stuff the whole lot weighs 25 lbs! Three containers hold ALL THE GOODS! Team KFWB GPS is putting an exciting twist on this cache! You will get information to find this cache a BIT AT A TIME. The first bit of information appears below. Every few days or less, and at RANDOM TIMES, we will give more information on THIS WEB PAGE (Rest & Be Thankful). There will be up to 12 DIFFERENT BITS OF INFORMATION you will be given to complete the information you require to get to this cache! At any time we'll say that "this is the final bit of information you will require" - then it's ACTION STATIONS!!! Who will be the first to this cache!!! HERE'S THE FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT.

1) Determine the distance IN METERS between the benchmark on Cloke Hill in North Saanich and the benchmark on Mt. MaGuire in East Sooke Regional Park. (Presume the great circle route) Now watch this web page for addidtional clues! The second clue could appear at any time! GOOD LUCK GEOCACHERS - from Team KFWB GPS!!!

2) Visit the OAK BAY MARINA parking lot on Beach Drive in Victoria, B.C. Look for a bench with the name "Phyllis Marion Vango Bazowaki" on it. From here look out to sea on a compass bearing of 67 and a half deg. T (use 19 deg. E declination on your compass). Look for a navigational beacon all white in colour on a built up base with a railing around it. What is the distance from the center of the bench to the navigational beacon in meters? Team KFWB GPS used a Garmin 76S and WAAS satellite #47 to determine the UTM of the bench.

3) You will have to go to 2 different places to determine this; the third installment of this puzzle. GO TO BEACH DRIVE (Victoria, B.C.) between Lewis and Boyd St. on the waterfront. On the oceanside of Beach Dr. you will see a green painted wall that stretches nearly to Odgen Point. The wall runs, more or less, southeast to northwest. At the southeast end (nearest Lewis St.) the wall begins. Count 14 vertical support sections of this wall, and just before you get to the 14th support section, you will see a sign that says "Overnight parking and sleeping prohibited".
From this sign, look out to sea at 227 deg. T (compass declination 19deg. east), to a green topped navigational beacon. Determine the number of meters from the sign to the navigational beacon. Now go to the Ross Bay cemetary in Victoria, B.C. You'll have to be CLEVER here. Go to the grave of D.A.Connon (who died on Mar. 3, 1909 at age 36). Mr. Connon was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland. Determine the UTM of his headstone. How many meters is it from the headstone to the navigational beacon mentioned above. Presume a ROUND WORLD, so take into consideration grid north versus true north. Note re the navigational beacon light - you can either go there, measure it by triangulation, work off various maps, get the information from a GPS unit (example: a Garmin 76) or however else you desire. Team KFWB used a Leica Vector Laser that does not require a survey prism. The one we used gives compass bearings and distances to 2500 meters, plus or minus one meter. Our Garmin 76S gave a considerably different answer than a 1:25,000 federal topographical map of the navigational beacon. These maps have been out of print for many years. The newer 1:50,000 series maps (the latest version in NAD 83 ((North American Datum of 1983 which is virtually the same as WGS 84)) scale makes it difficult to perform very exact measurements. As most geocachers use Garmin GPS units, we are going to go with what the Garmin unit says. The Garmin units are within a few meters of where the navigation beacon really is.

4)IT'S ADVENTURE TIME EVERYONE!!!

We took the PROXRS Trimble to 408291 East, 5387231 North. At this position we drove a bright pink stake into the ground. On this stake is a GPS tag #. What is the number of this Tag?

What follows are the names of upcoming caches, to be released AFTER Nov. 10, 2002.

a) SHOWDOWN AT GRIZZLY RIVER (parts 1 & 2)
b) THE LEGIONS LAST PATROL (part 1 & 2)
c) THE LEGEND OF SUNDANCE RIDGE (part 1 & 2)
d) ISLAND FLYER (part 1 & 2)
e) BOLD ENDURANCE

It's a good idea that all geocachers carry with them a rag to dry out any geocache that they find to be damp, and a couple of large oversized ziplock bags, or plastic bags of some kind, to replace any bags that have become damaged.

POINT DEFIANCE geocache, and ABRUPT ENCOUNTER WITH REALITY geocache, will be released shortly. WATCH FOR THEM!!

5) Start in the outback of WESTERN AUSTRALIA at Zone 50J
685251 - 6560961. REMEMBER ('NORTHING' numbers START at zero meters at the equator, and INCREASE going towards the North Pole. Numbers going SOUTH of the equator START at ten million meters and DECREASE as you head toward the South Pole). From the UTM above, go on a compass course of 50.5119074 deg. until you hit the first large bridge on Vancouver Island.

At the N.W. corner of this bridge, embedded in concrete, look for a SURVEY TABLET, OR BENCH MARK. What is the number of this bench mark?

6) Determine the distance in meters between the Robert Burns statue in Beacon Hill Park, (Victoria) and the flag pole at the War Memorial on Beach Drive near Cattle Point (Victoria). Presume the world is a sphere.

7) How far West, in meters, and how far North, in meters, would you have to go from the bench mark at the Gonzales weather station, to the bench mark at the top of Mount Tolmie (both in Victoria, B.C.) A bit of yellow paint is beside the Mount Tolmie bench mark. Presume the world is a sphere.

8) Go to Mount Douglas in Victoria, B.C. to approximately 474466 East 5371264 North. Look for a yellow stake beside a SWAMP. The UTM IS ONLY APPROXIMATE. WHAT IS THE GPS TAG NUMBER ON THE STAKE?

9) Go to approximately 460529 East 5378701 North. Look for a GPS TAG nailed to a tree. What is the TAG NUMBER?

10) Go to Fort Rodd Hill Park. Look for a high flagpole (it's the tallest one). Now go to the West side of Fort Rodd Hill Park. Look for an old unused flagpole. What is the distance in meters between the two?

ACTION STATIONS!!! THE FINAL DETAILS OF THIS CACHE AND HOW TO GET TO IT, WILL BE RELEASED AT APPROXIMATELY 9:00 AM, SUNDAY, THE 24th NOVEMBER, 2002!!

THE FIRST TEAM TO REACH THIS CACHE, IS ENTITLED TO TAKE THE ENTIRE PELICAN WATERPROOF CASE AND IT'S CONTENTS, PLUS ALL THE CD'S, AND THE FOAM INSERTS FOR THE PELICAN CASE.

ALL TEAMS PLEASE SIGN THE LOG BOOK IN THE LARGE. CLEAR RUBBERMAID CONTAINER.

THE FIRST (WINNING TEAM) MUST LEAVE THE ENTIRE CONTENTS THAT ARE IN THE RUBBERMAID CONTAINER (INCLUDING ALL THE CASH) FOR THE OTHER CACHERS.

TEAM KFWB GPS HOPES THAT WE GET EXCITING REPORTS FROM THE VARIOUS CACHERS WHO HAVE ATTEMPTED TO REACH THIS CACHE.

Cachers have been asked ten questions,
Questions 1, 2, 3 (part A & B) 6, 7 (Part A & B) and 10 require answers in meters.
Questions 4, 5, 8, and 9 are all GPS tag numbers or benchmark numbers. Call your numerical findings on all these positions “METERS” i.e. All numbers will be considered meters.
Note – questions 3 and 7 are two part answers.
To get to the cache add items 1 thru 5 (that you are given on the cache page) to 309333. This will be your “Easting”.
Now add items 6 thru 10 (that you are given on the cache page) to 5379497. This will be your “Northing”.
We’re aware that inaccuracies have built up so the UTM you determine will be approximate. The UTM you are to get to is a tree. We have placed 3 very bright orange 2 inch circular tags on this tree about 2 meters from it’s base, so they are highly visible.
The actual cache is hidden under a log and forest cover 2 meters due West of this tree (270 degrees true) (compass declination 19 degrees East).

GOOD LUCK TO ALL CACHERS!!

TEAM KFWB GPS.
