Where there's smoke... Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

DredPirateRoberts: This is now archived. I was unaware by my having a cache in the area prohibited others from placing one nearby. However, someone emailed me telling me so. That was never the case in the past. With the fire lookout burnt down in the last fire, it no longer has any relevance to the name. I am thankful the cache police are on top of people who don't follow cache guidelines. The world is now a safer place. Praise God! Allah akbar! Yes this is sarcasm. Place your damn cache wherever the hell you want. This is a free society. Just ask the Occupy Angeles Forest people.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the Angeles Forest. You will need an Adventure Pass, which can be purchased at ranger stations and your local sports stores.

Charlton Flats is your start point. You can leave from either end of the campground. The nicer way is to go to your right as you enter and drive to the lower campground. Go to the turn-a-round. Park before the turn-a-round. (Remember to display your pass) If you walk into the turnaround and look back at your car you will see a sign pointing out the trailhead. Cross the gully. On the other side you will see where the trail begins. The trail is well marked and maintained. From this point it is 3 miles roundtrip. The trail starts off @ approx. 5230' with an elevation gain of 700' or 400' depending on which end of the campground you leave from. If you leave from the higher end of the campground you will be taking a mostly shadeless fireroad the entire way.

The cache itself is NOW (7/19/02)in a 6 quart Rubbermaid container with a blue lid.

Original contents were a log book,

  • 2 pens,
  • 5-Smokey Bear anntena balls,
  • 5-Smokey Bear clip-on badges,
  • 1-Smokey Bear kid's activity book,
  • and trying to keep with my moniker, there is 1-black bag with a Jolly Roger on it, containing "jewels".

WATCH OUT FOR THE YUCCA PLANTS! (NATIVE AMERICANS USED THEM AS SEWING NEEDLES.) BE CAREFUL NOT TO SKEWER YOURSELVES!
