Ft. Yargo Geocache Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

erik88l-r: Not sure about the ethics of placing a new cache within feet of an existing cache, than saying that the new cache is the only cache. Oh well, I guess as the land manager they can make the rules.

Geocache Description:

An enjoyable tour of some of the sights of Ft. Yargo State Park gathering clues to open a geocache container. This is a hunt best done by car, like on a rainy day, getting out at each location when your GPS tells you to. There is a $5 daily park entry fee, but I would encourage you to purchase an annual pass or spend a bit more for a "Friends of the Park" pass. The cache is accessable from 8am to 5pm any day except Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.

Fort Yargo State Park has three entrances on Hwy 81. You'll start your scavenger hunt at the center one, working your way north. You might find it helpful to bring a calculator or an elementary school student to help with the higher math.

First you'll proceed to the second entrance and take it to
N33° 57.881 / W83° 44.428.
How many acres does the lake cover? Call the third digit of this number C.

Now enter the park at the third entrance. If you haven't paid your $2 $3 by now you should be ashamed. Ante up! You'll drive by the actual cache location, but you should keep going until you get to
N33° 58.092 / W83° 43.841
You'll find an informative plaque describing the Marbury Watershed Project. You'll read a five digit number detailing how many acres the watershed covers. Call the middle digit of that number A.

As you drive back up the road turn left to go to
N33° 57.985 / W83° 44.183
The park has several enjoyable hiking trails ranging from easy half mile trails to one of just over 2.5 miles along the back of the lake. The coordinates should place you at a trail head. What is the maximum grade found on that trail? Call that two digit number D.

Now proceed to the parks namesake. In front of the fort at
N33° 58.594 / W83° 44.108
you'll find a Ga. State historic marker with the history of the fort. Take the first and last digits of the year the fort was built, add them together, and call it B. Take some time to check out the old fort. It's pretty neat.

Now proceed to your final stop at
N33° 58.721 / W83° 44.080.
If you don't see the cache just ask for it. Even if you do see the cache ask for it :)
Now the clues you've gathered will be needed to get into the box. There is a combination lock with the combination AB/C/D. First spin the dial clockwise stopping at AB. Turn it counterclockwise past AB stopping at C. Then go clockwise again to D. If the lock doesn't open do not pass GO, do not collect $200, but double check the arithmetic. If you've entered the combination properly you should be able to pull the shackle free and work it off the pin. Once you open the box please log your visit in the log book and trade trinkets. No Happy Meal toys please. If you didn't bring an appropriate trade item there are many choices available for purchase around you. Support the park so they'll support geocaching. The park employees may check to be sure you only put appropriate kid friendly trinkets in the box.

This geocache is hosted by Ft. Yargo State Park and placed with the approval of Park Manager Paul Bradshaw. He's since moved on to manage another park, but his assistant Arnie is still there and knows all about the cache. If you see him please tell him "Hi".
Note: Conventional container geocaches were prohibited in Ga. State Parks when this cache was placed You are encouraged to get to know the Park Manager at other State Parks and ask him or her if they would sponsor a cache for you. They no longer need to be in the park office as this one is.

NOTE: Fort Yargo has a new Visitor's Center, where the cache container has been moved to. Final stage coords updated. Thanks go to Laziguana for getting me the new coords.
