Caesar is upset. The meaningless war with Brutus’ forces has dragged on too long. Caesar knew that the most important thing to beating his foe would be to protect his communications and secure his documents. His stress was amplified due to the fact that a previous code had been broken, leading to the theft of priceless artifacts.
Caesar decided to hide his most important documents in a secret location. He would send a message to his allies, which would explain how to find the cache of documents. He needed a code that was secure but could quickly be deciphered by those who needed access. In order to maintain secrecy, he decided to encode the message himself.
He worked through the night to come up with a code that could protect the location of the library, yet leave it accessible to those he trusted. When he finished, he gave the message to a trusted member of his staff.
‘But Caesar,’ asked the staffer, ‘what is the key to deciphering the message?’
Caesar just laughed and said, ‘My friend, the library is the key.’
