Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Anza Borrego Desert near the Borrego Mountain Wash.  There are some very interesting wind caves in this area and great views of the Borrego Valley.

You can enter the Borrego Mountain Wash via several different routes. The recommended starting point to the cache once in Borrego Mountain Wash is at N 33 11.246 W 116 13.290. I would recommend 4WD if you plan to drive into Borrego Mountain Wash. If you have 2WD, you can park above The Slot and hike to the cache. No matter which route you choose, make sure you stay on the designated off-road trails. A few of the suggested routes are described below:

For the Experienced Off-Roader With 4WD
Get off Highway 78 at Buttes Pass Road. This is a dirt road located at N 33 09.543 W 116 13.120. When the road forks, take the road to the left called Borrego Mountain Wash (If you go straight, you will still be on Buttes Pass Road). Keep driving on the Borrego Mountain Wash road until you come to a large drop-off at N 33 11.136 W 116 13.430. This is a steep, sandy and rutted drop-off. Do not attempt to drive down this drop-off unless you are comfortable driving your 4WD on this type of terrain. Also be warned that the drop-off is one way and there are some rocky areas to negotiate as you exit through Borrego Mountain Wash. You will get to the recommended starting point (N 33 11.246 W 116 13.290) shortly after the drop-off. Note: If you prefer to park at the top of the drop-off and hike down, it is only a short distance to the starting cache.

For Others With 4WD
There are several less adventurous ways to get to the North entrance of Borrego Mountain Wash.
One option is to enter Buttes Pass Road from Highway 78 as described above. Stay on Buttes Pass road at the fork (right at fork) and take it all the way to San Felipe Wash where you will take a left. At N 33 12.742 W 116 12.799 you will take a left into Borrego Mountain Wash which will take you to the recommended starting point (N 33 11.246 W 116 13.290).

Another option is to take San Felipe Wash from Borrego Springs Road at N 33 09.862 W 116 15.286. Stay in San Felipe Wash until you come to Borrego Mountain Wash on the right at N 33 12.742 W 116 12.799 which will take you to the recommended starting point (N 33 11.246 W 116 13.290).

For Those With 2WD
Get off Highway 78 at Buttes Pass Road. This is a dirt road located at N 33 09.543 W 116 13.120. When the road forks, take the road to the left called Borrego Mountain Wash (If you go straight, you will still be on Buttes Pass Road). Keep driving on the Borrego Mountain Wash road until you come to a parking area at N 33 10.929 W 116 12.844. Hike down into the adjacent wash and head East. This will take you thorough The Slot and eventually dump you into Borrego Mountain Wash from which you will get to the the recommended starting point (N 33 11.246 W 116 13.290). Note that while this route should be easily passable with 2WD, be careful in case conditions change.

The cache container is a small ammo box. There is some premium initial geoswag, which I will let you discover for yourself. While you are in the area, make sure you check out my Slots-O-Fun cache that is nearby.

Happy Geocaching,
Rocket Man
