Nearest town is Amsterdam (Mpumalanga), 35km. Cache is 1 km from gravel road, difficult to get to with low ground clearance car.

This location can be used as a base and overnight camping for geocachers seeking caches in surrounding area. Even if you do not intend camping, it is best to park your car at the lake and search for the cache from there.
Camping is very basic, no services are provided. You must bring all your supplies and take back all your rubbish. Comfortable accommodation is available in Piet Retief.
Cache itself is in plastic screw top container and consists of a pen, logbook, stone carving of elephant and tyre pressure gauge. It is hidden on a plateau above the lake between two rocks and covered with thin split rocks

#2117 What a difference from the last time we tried to find this cache. The road leading to this cache is now clearly visible (although not sign-posted) and they have finished tarring the road. With the new coordinates and this misleading picture no longer an option this was an easy find. There was no-one around at the dam on this Sunday and it looks like a nice rustic campsite if you are prepared to "rough-it". OUT: elephant IN star TFTC

Found the cache with one of the local farmers, please be advised that being locals they say it is not a safe stay over but you can. This however is also on private land which belongs to Sappi.

** Coordinates Changed From **
S 26° 26.433 E 030° 41.620
Distance From Old: 25 feet
Original cache is safe and sound at its published coordinates. It was not muggled and is waiting for the next adventurer. It is in fact easy to find. Signal is the best you can get. Peeled stones it is hidden behind are obvious. But it is true that two meters from actual cache is similar arrangement of stones only with no bush on top. And it looks like muggled cache. I thought so myseelf during one of my preceding maintenance visits. I therefore allow ePajero this find. I also changed hint, removed some misleading pictures and took new coordinates reading with my "H" designated device.
Construction of the road is permanent feature there, we must try to live with it. This 12 km road in easy terrain will never be completed. Camping place is available, free and in good condition. Two workers, the pumping crew, stay there in a caravan. It is empty over weekends.
