A gorgeous 8 hour hike in the majestic cederberg to the famous
Wolfberg Arch.
Permits are needed to do this hike, at a cost of R40. I highly
recommend that you buy a Wild Card from National Parks board before
going to the Cederberg, as you have to pay for every hike you do,
but its free if you have a Wild Card. Permits can be obtained from
Dwarsrivier.
Drive through Sanddrift to get to the start of the hike, and
head up the path to the top of the Wolfberg mountain.
Just before the cliff face at the top, follow the cairns in to the
large crack on the left for the easy route, but if you want to do
the fun route, veer slightly to the right near the cliff.
You should reach a dead end, with a cairn in the middle. There is
then a tricky rock scramble on the right corner, just above head
height. Head right for about 15 - 20m on the ledge, and then head
left. there will be a crevase with 4 large rocks blocking it. Climb
over these rocks, and you are entering the more exciting of the
Wolfberg Cracks. This is a wonderful route, but does require some
squeezing through tunnels, and shimmying up crevises. It gets quite
tricky to the end.
Either route, you will end up on the flat top of Wolfberg, where
you will bear left for 3.5kms to the arch.
I suggest marking the route back down on your GPS, just to be
safe.
Be very careful up top here in misty weather, as it can be very
easy to loose the path, and in summer it can get very hot, so bring
plenty of water and sunscreen.
I almost stood on a horned adder on this hike, and also saw some
fresh leopards prints, so watch out!

| February 26 by bzou (670 found) A great hike we've done in 5h15 with 45min picnic under the arch (for my wife,me searching for caches!!) Thx a lot and greetings from France!!
[view this log] | November 26, 2008 by itzamna (6 found) Beautiful location! First visit, well worth it. We also found signs of leopard - a half-eaten rabbit/hare on the path! No snakes but spotted their spoor across the path a few times... Worth looking out for: the rock jumper (bird): medium sized black bird with longish legs, prefers to scramble and jump from rock to rock, quite tame and comes close to picnicking hikers. Males have a white stripe on either side of the face. (No, I ain't no twitcher, but this birdy is a beaut, and apparently endemic to the Wolfberg plateau).
