Elephant Knees Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: When it announced that Anza Borrego Desert State Park would no longer allow geocaches, this cache was disabled in hopes that we could come to an arrangement where some geocaches could remain in the Park. Many years have passed and the situation has not changed and as this cache owner now seems to be inactive, I am archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Near the top of the 'Elephant Knees' in the Split Mountain area of Anza Borrego State Park

A good place to start is at N32 59.387 W116 07.133 in the Fish Creek Wash. 4WD is a good idea, but 2WD is adequate to get near this location. Area is the mud hills just SW of the Split Mountain area. Cache is located near the top of a hill that has the 'Elephant Knees' formation just NW of the top near the center of some uplifted rocks in a square cookie tin, protected with some rocks. Contents include:

- 1 Mr. Piggy kitchen clip
- 1 V-Peg game (probably lacking batteries)
- 1 'Finally got it together, but forgot where I put it' tile
- 2 pencils
- 1 notebook
- 1 horse shoe

Just lift off the main heavy (10 pound) rock that holds the lid of the container down, and protects it from the rain. To get to the site, I recommend approaching the summit from behind. Do not try to ascend from the high point at N32 58.531 W116 07.395, but nearby, easy ascents are possible. Also watch for dangerous mud caves near the previous location. Look at the map that will accompany this cache (as a picture). That was my loop hike. It is an awesome hike. Only about 600' vertical is involved, but caution is recommended, as mudcaves can be dangerous if you fall into them. Not all have accessible exits. This cache has been planted to cover the fact that no geocache has been placed in this area, and it is a most worthy area. Do NOT approach cache from northwest! That approach is too steep. Also be careful of climbing up 'not-so-steep' side,a s old sea shell laden rock can be good traction going up, but can also be very sharp, much like a coral reef.
