Geocache Description:

Catskill Maltby Hollow by deadhorsepoint

The cache lies in a wooded ravine, carved by Wittenberg Brook. An unmaintained and sporatically blazed trail drops steeply southward from the Cornell-Wittenberg col through this remote area. The lowermost part is an extension of Moonhaw Rd. near West Shokan.

"...charcoal kilns in Maltby Hollow belonged to the Millerton Iron Company and were operating in 1880. The charcoal was hauled by wagon to West Shokan where it was loaded into rail cars for Millerton until about 1900.

"Herbert Hover built two kilns and then sold to Charles Maltby who built four more and developed an extensive charcoal burning business, employing 100 men."
- from The Catskill Forest, A History (Michael Kudish)

If you enter from Moonhaw, please respect the local residents. Like most mountain dwellers, they're friendly people who see a steady stream of hikers and hunters passing their front door. Don't park in front of the private gate or at the adjacent school bus turnaround.

If you hike in from the Burroughs Range and return the same day, my hat's off to ya. Better to make it an overnighter.

The cache consists of a ziplocked notebook and pencil inside a small metal container. You need not bring items for trade. Hopefully the metal will rust up nicely and become one with the gorgeous surroundings. Good luck!
