Geocache Description:

Visit old covered bridges on a 43-mile virtual cache tour through the heart of the countryside of Berks County. Find the answer to a question about each bridge. A great cache for those hot or cold and rainy or snowy days or nights when you really don’t want to leave the car and bushwhack. Take grandma - this one is wheelchair accessible! See my nearby Bucks County tours. These have conventional caches if you like the hunt as well as the touring.

The route I show in the picture was the one I took. But you of course can visit the bridges in the order convenient to you. Notice the hex signs on some of the bridge portals – these are common in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

In order to report a “find” for this cache, email the answers to the questions; don't post them of course. It’s OK to post your “find” at the same time. If you have a camera, post your pictures. It’ll make for a nice album. Note my comment below regarding pictures and visiting the Pleasantville bridge.

None of the pictures are spoilers. There are no encrypted hints. Have fun. Take your camera.

Kutz Mill Covered Bridge N40 32.014 W75 48.327 also known as the Sacony Bridge (it crosses the Sacony Creek, of course) was constructed in 1854 by Bitner and Ahrens. It is located in a pretty scenic valley north of the college town of Kutztown.

What year was the bridge repaired as indicated on a nameplate on the south side of the bridge? __________?

Dreibelbis Station Covered Bridge N40 33.277 W75 52.809 was built by in 1869. It is located over Maiden Creek and may have served as a railway station a one time.

What is the address of one of the black mailboxes on the highway near the west entrance to the bridge __________?

Wertz Covered Bridge N40 22.161 W75 58.773 was built in 1867 by Amandas Knerr. Also known as the Red Bridge it is located in the Berks County Heritage Park over the Tulpehocken Creek. The bridge is closed to traffic. With a length of 204 feet, it is the longest single-span covered bridge in Pennsylvania. The park seems like a nice place to visit when it’s warmer. It was mighty cold and windy when I went through so I didn’t hang around to check it out. See the park’s web page for some interesting things to do while visiting. www.berksparkandrec.org/heritage/

What is that strange contraption with the cable just off the northwest side of the bridge __________? (Please – don’t post pictures of it and spoil it for others!)

Greisemer Covered Bridge N40 21.796 W75 44.297 was built in 1832. It is believed to be the oldest bridge in Berks county. It is located over the Matatawny Creek. See Pleasantville Bridge comments below.

Pleasantville Covered Bridge N40 22.727 W75 44.329 exists again. It just re-opened in June, 2004

What is the height clearance __________? _________________________________________________________

COVERED BRIDGES

Does anyone build covered bridges now?
They used to mark the country here and there,
Not leaping streams, wide open to the air,
With gallant masonry arched like a brow
Above the water's eye. You hushed, somehow,
Your chatter as the horse-hoofs plodded in,
Thumping the boards, all shadowy but for thin
Bright rays the loosened shingles might allow.

A child could lean out from the carriage seat
And see through ill-set floors the river's trend,
The shaken dust; knee-deep, a docile cow,
Or, far ahead, a picture framed and neat;
The sunny outer world at shadow's end.
