Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the shoreline close to the towering cliffs of St. Abbs Head (a National Trust of Scotland nature reserve). This cache is located near the site of "New Asgard" in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame.

The cache is located near the shoreline, close to the towering cliffs, of St. Abbs Head (a National Trust of Scotland nature reserve).

The starting points I recommend for attempting this cache are the car parks at either St. Abbs Harbour or the nature reserve visitors centre at Northfield. Once the car is secure take the coastal path north along the cliff tops, this route offers spectacular views of the village of St. Abbs and the coast to the south. You can then continue to follow the cliff top path to the lighthouse or the through the valley of the Mire Loch. Both routes should eventually take you to Petticowick a small bay with beach and pier. The imposing cliffs running to the North West, which dominate this cove, represent the meeting of the Lammermuir Hills and the North Sea.

It is possible to drive up onto St. Abbs Head and park closer to the cache site. I have refrained from including details of this route, as you’ll miss most of the scenery. So don’t be lazy!

Care must be taken to reach the beach and pier as the path has been eroded. Once you have descended successfully you can then traverse the shoreline to the cache site.

As a small detour, on your way along the foreshore from Petticowick to Broadhaven you’ll pass some caves. Take a torch and go deep into the third cave the turn right through the cross passage and you end up at the back of the first cave.

Warning

"The cache cannot be easily reached at or near high tide via the shore. I would therefore recommend timing your visit as close to low tide as possible. While it doesn’t require the use of climbing equipment some rock scrambling is involved. It is possible (maybe easier, but not as much fun) to approach the cache from above.

Seal Pupping

Please avoid visting the cache in OCtober and November while seals are pupping on the beach at Broadhaven and Petticowick.

Sea Caves - on your way to the cache

Just across the beach from the pier at Petticowick is a cliff with three sea caves. The first cave is guarded by a rockpool, the second cave is just a short recess, but the third caves goes all the way in and across. So bring a torch if you choose to explore the sea caves on your way to this cache.

Cache placed with the kind permission of the National Trust for Scotland.
