Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Your hike begins at the La Luz trail head (N 35° 13.188' W 106° 28.844'). The cache is in a coffee can with a white lid on a jutting rock formation 2.71 miles (around 8400 ft altitude) up the trail.

BEWARE OF CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS! During the summer it can be very hot and you will need plenty of water. Summer also brings afternoon monsoons with plenty of lightning! As this cache is on an outcrop of rock, searching during a lightning storm is out of the question. During winter, snow and ice may not allow a safe search.

Beyond the words of warning pertaining to the weather, this is a "must do" hike because it is very scenic and accessible from Albuquerque.

Take Tramway Blvd. to the La Cueva/Juan Tabo picnic ground turnoff. Follow the signs that lead you to the Juan Tabo picnic ground and La Luz trail head.

The original contents of the cache contained:

  1. A Schrade pocket lockblade
  2. Some wire magic tricks
  3. A bookmark made of deer leather ** note this item is intended to be a "hitchiker". If you find this item please take it to your next cache find and update me as to it's whereabouts. I got this from some Mayan indians in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.** Reach at CanineMaestro@Aol.com
This is not too hard of a hike for most locals, I did the trip in 2hrs 15mins. If you are attempting this hike and you live at lower elevations, take your time and soak in the scenery. Don't let the altitude take the fun out of it!

Happy Hunting!

P.S- Would someone please leave a pencil for the logbook?

#2250 Great views from the cache site!! It's always nice when I can find some of the oldest geocaches in the state!! If that's the original coffee can it's still in decent shape, but the lids starting to wear now. This one took me around 10 minutes to find because I was down below the cache at first, then I was to far north. I eventually saw the short geotrail that leads to the cache. Thanks for the fun!! SL

Enjoyed a nice wander out onto the rocks. Didn't so much enjoy being attacked by a cactus. After removal of 15 or so needles from my leg and some pictures of the view my friend found the cache. Lid is now a different color. While looking for the cache I happened on a zip-loc bag with a picture of a climber in it (picture taken close to that spot) and a single stick of gum. I have no idea what that is about, but I put it back in its hiding place. We attempted to hike down to the waterfall that you can hear from this location. It proved to be extremely difficult, and we gave up after being attack by more local foliage and doing some not terribly safe rock climibing. Not the best use of energy on the way up to the top, but a grand adventure!

Great location for a cache. We found it easily and had a nice rest before we continued up La Luz.
Thanks

I stopped here and ate my lunch as a light drizzle fell and I admired the view. Very unusual weather for this time of year. This cache is hidden nicely; I ended up going much farther out on the outcropping than I really needed to before finding it. TFTC

Found with Cougarox and NMFirehorse on our trek down the La Luz. Nice spot with some great views (of course, you could say the same thing about most of this trail). Signed log. Thanks for the cache.
