This is one of my favorite places and I think you'll agree that it's a fitting place for the first cache placed in the state of Utah. After you find the stash, relax a little and wet a hook in Potters Pond. You'll catch your fill of pan-sized trout using Rainbow, Lemon Twist or Green power-bait.

If you are planning on staying in the Potter's Pond campground, its a good idea to get a reservation. The reservation number is 1-877-444-6777.

Note: there is heavy winter snow cover in this area during winter months.

Alas, Mapquest/Mapsource claims another victim: Ckayaks. I wonder if they will ever get the bug fixed that tells people that Skyline Drive and Bacon Rind Canyon is the best way to get to this cache. It is NOT, as at least one new visitor to this area each year can attest.

If anyone is interested, take The paved highway from Fairview to just past Huntington Reservoir, then make a right. This is Miller Flat Road. Follow the main road south til you see a sign that says "Potter's Ponds" (yes, it is a ways down there). It is a good road, and many RVs and trucks with trailers use it frequently during the warmer months. But, if you are the adventurous sort, take Skyline drive. The views are great.

This was the culmination of a day of caching. The snow (and mud) on the ground made this a much more difficult hike than normal, but we made it. It was nice to find a cache that wasn't full of junk and has obviously been well maintained. Took our picture with the camera in the cache. TNLNSL.

Added this one to a weekend trip and had a great time finding it! Got up to it ahead of a pretty good storm that hit a little while later. We "rescued" the second ammo can, and will set up a challenge cache with it soon. Most of the snow from the previous storm had melted, just saw a few patches here and there, but it was pretty muddy and slippery going up (and down!). Took us 0.66 miles round trip to get this one, but a great little hike. So glad we decided to get this one today! Thanks for keeping this one active! [Great day today - 4 CAU caches, Potter's Pond, and enough points to complete the 100-Star Challenge (GC1N17R), weather from sunny to blowing snow, 33 finds, NO DNF!!]

On a recommendation from the Oakcoins folks, I headed here on my way from SLC to Las Vegas. What a wonderful spot for a Columbus Day find. A long drive down the dirt roads (another rental car I hope no one ever gets) on a cloudy, warm afternoon. Parked close by then started the ascent. I should note that I had DNF'd a cache on Teton Pass by Jackson WY at 8550' and I was very disappointed as it was the highest cache I had attempted. My highest cache before that was about 5000' in Colorado. I was very pleased to realize that this was above either elevation, and would now be both the oldest cache and the highest cache I've found, assuming I could find it. The elevation was bothering this fellow from sea level but I took it slow and took several breaks. The only sounds were the wind in the trees and the nearby woodpecker tapping away. On this colder fall day, a light coating of snow had covered the ground and some had melted making the ground a little soft and muddy. I was surprised there wasn't more smell in the air as I crossed the stream, but the smell of aspen was much stronger at the cache location. It took me a few minutes to find the cache as my GPSr wasn't cooperating. I eventually found the pair of ammo cans at 9143', now officially my highest find. I spent a few minutes reading the logs (Mountain Wanderer!) before adding two pages of my own. I sat on a nearby log before snapping some pictures with my camera and starting down the hill. Given the weather and the lateness of the year I figured there aren't going to be a lot of other finders soon so I took the jeep and ckayaks TBs. They'll travel with me to Maine where they'll visit Maine's oldest cache (GC128) before I find a nice spot for them. I did do some CITO at 8998'; it's far too pretty to leave stuff like that all over the ground. I, too, couldn't take the extra ammo can so it's still there.

I had a wonderful time at the cache during this solo visit. I wish I had brought a set of kayakerinme coins to leave in the cache but I hadn't thought this far ahead when I left Maine. I did the next best thing though. I left a note with my email address and a code. The next finder can contact me with the code and I'll mail a set of geocoins to the finder, if he or she wants them.

Thanks for the great day, wonderful find, and very pleasant memories :)

(Note: this didn't stay my highest find for long. I found another the next day at 10,145')

We really wanted this one since it is the oldest in Utah. GPSr took us on a wild goose chase. We finally got headed in the right direction, but alas, we ran out of road and daylight about 3 or 4 miles from the cache. Better luck next time. :(
