VTA Quiz Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Rat: Due to a change in the physical environment as well as major changes to the website where the answers to the quiz were supposed to be found, I have decided that this cache is just not practical to keep. Another motivating factor is the placement of the Trolley series after I placed this; VTA still has a perfectly good cache presence (one of which was within a stone's throw of this one.) I'm glad to see my idea of familiarizing cachers with government agencies has taken hold with Trolley and Library series. I have retrieved the container - an ammo can with 9 lives. I will find a suitable place for it.

Geocache Description:

This is another in my series of government agency quizzes. The cache is not at the listed coordinates. To find the real coordinates, take the quiz below and follow the instructions.

A. VTA is
1. An agency of the state
2. A county agency
3. An independent agency that used to be part of the county
4. A non-profit corporation
5. A joint power agency between cities, similar to a joint venture

B. How many voting members on VTA's Board of Directors? ___ Subtract 3 from that number.

C. VTA's bus fleet numbers:
1. < 100 2. 100 - 250 3. 251 - 450 4. 451 - 699 5. 700+
Take the answers to Question F and this question. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. That difference is C.

D. VTA's light rail (trolley) fleet numbers approximately:
1. 20 2. 35 3. 50 4. 65 5. 70
Multiply the number by 3, subtract 2, and take the last digit (if the product is only one digit, that is the last digit).

E. In addition to operating public transit (bus and rail) VTA has other responsibilities. Select the one that does NOT apply:
1. VTA is the Congestion Management Agency for the county.
2. VTA manages paratransit services
3. VTA designs and builds highway projects
4. VTA condemns property by eminent domain for public projects
5. VTA is the county transportation planning agency
6. VTA operates Mineta International Airport.

F. The full correct name of VTA is
1. Santa Clara Valley Transit Agency
2. Santa Clara Valley Transit Administration
3. Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority
4. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
5. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Administration
6. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency
7. Silicon Valley Transit Agency
8. Silicon Valley Transit Administration
9. Silicon Valley Transit Authority

G. VTA is in dire financial condition. There are many reasons for this. Select the one that is NOT true:
1. Caltrans has refused to maintain the highway projects constructed by VTA upon their completion, requiring VTA to maintain them indefinitely.
2. VTA is more heavily dependent on sales tax than other agencies (about 80% of its operating revenue), and sales taxes drop more than other taxes in a bad economy.
3. VTA has a very low farebox recovery ratio. Less than 15% of its operating costs are covered by fares.
4. VTA provides more services to the disabled than are required by law.
Multiply by 7, subtract 1, and take the last digit of the answer.

H. According to the Organization Overview page, daily VTA passenger ridership on bus and rail transportation is about
1. 34,000
2. 82,000
3. 101,000
4. 125,000
5. 129,000
6. 147,000
7. 160,000
8. 170,000
9. 180,000

Be sure to do the math operations at the end of questions B, C, D, and G. No further math is required. Just substitute the answers to the questions with the corresponding letters into 37 2A.BCD 121 5E.FGH.

The cache is a standard ammo box with lots of goodies for trading, including VTA rulers, pencils, keyrings, etc. There is a FTF prize of two SF Muni passes - use on the cable cars the next time you go to SF. There are also toy cars, trucks, etc. This is a good one to take the kids to. Transportation related items are preferred for trading, but not required. The container is partially covered with leaves, etc. so that it won't be seen by casual passersby, but it shouldn't be hard to find if you have the right coordinates. Please leave it with the yellow lettering down, and recover it in similar fashion.
