Gnome's Night Raid Multi-cache

Cache-tech: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache.
When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link (Mine) across the top and then click on this cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
Cache-tech

Geocache Description:

Follow the camouflaged Fire Tacks at night using a flashlight to find the cache.

Gnome's Night Raid

This is a night-only cache along the lines of 'After Dark' in which you go to the posted coordinates and use a flashlight to follow reflective markers in the dark to the cache. It uses a different kind of trail marker though, Stealth Fire Tacks which are tiny reflectors that are very hard to spot during the day but show up quite well at night. You can attempt this during the day of course, but steps have been taken in the placement of the camouflaged markers to make that difficult<grin>. Plus it will not be as spooky! The reflectors are on a well-defined trail with several forks in a safe area. When you come to a fork, continue on the same side of the path that the closest trail marker is on. You will see reflectors from time to time every 50 meters or less as you keep on the trail in the right direction.

The reflectors are placed between 7 and 8 feet high in trees on the sides of the trail, and sometimes in the tree line a few meters to dissuade finding them during daylight hours. They are placed in areas that are free from foliage and taking the path using the reflectors has been tested with different types of flashlights. In some cases (but not all) you can see the reflectors in a 240 degree arc so they are visible going to the cache as well as coming back from it.

At one point you will see a tree with two reflectors on it. This indicates that you should mark the current waypoint in your GPS (so you can get back to the main trail afterwards), leave the main path and look for reflectors on the smaller side trail in the woods (the same side of the trail as the tree with two markers). To help with the last few legs and to keep the cache winter-friendly, one of the trees in the woods with a reflector on it also has a copper tag on the back with the actual cache coordinates. This will help you zoom in on the cache. The final hollow tree that houses the cache also has two reflectors on it

The posted coordinates are for the tree line just inside the trail head. Head to this point and shine your flashlight up and down the main path in either direction until you see a marker. Continue to follow them until you reach the trail marker with the tag posting the coords for the cache, or if you are good at spotting the tags, simply follow them all the way. The cache is a plastic tobacco container placed in an odd-looking hollow tree. The container is large enough to accommodate a CD.

Jebidiah the Gnome guards this cache. He is sleeping on top of it, try not to wake him when you make your trades and place him back on top of the cache the way he was when you leave.

The trail is flat and good for walking in the dark(but wet in the spring), you can also bring your dog!.

TIP: When using your flashlight to spot the Fire Tacks, they tend to show up best when you hold the flashlight up to your temple, the same level as your your eye. GPS reception is quite poor as you get closer to the cache (must be that UFO buried nearby) so bringing a compass is a good idea. If you can't see any sats on the way out, simply head magnetic south to pick up the main path.

Cheers!
