There are several trails up the mountain, and we have done them all, including the loop, going up one way and down the other. This is an extremely popular area and parking can be tricky. You must either have a NW Forest Pass, or pay $5 with the envelopes provided, or go down the road just a ways and park on the side. We did that the first time, not having a pass then, and not correct change to pay. Be aware you could receive a citation if you park in the lot and do not pay up !
The cache is at the very top of Dog Mountain. The trails are wide and safe but at times can be quite rocky and if wet,slippery. The ascent is steep, but has nice spots where it levels off. Take your time, catch your breath and enjoy your view and surroundings. To go up the trail one way is 3.8 miles, while it is 3.7 miles the other. We recommend good hiking boots and that you carry water. Try to go on a day when you think it will be nice,as the weather at the top can get cold quick. The wildflowers were in abundance and the forest primeval through which you pass to get there will make you want to come again and again. Happy trails, and don't forget your camera !
