Cavernous
This is a fun one to get to. You will go up and down, peaking at
around 900 metres. You will walk a fair distance - about 45
minutes. You will see some fantastic scenery and views. Make sure
to go to the nearby lookout about 10 minutes from the Hole.
You want to go to the intersection at S41° 01.228' E172°
53.701'. Take the shingle road, it is about 11kms long. Follow it
to the car park at S40° 56.587' E172° 53.508'
Take the path to the main feature. Satellite coverage will be
hopeless, so save your batteries until you emerge from the bush.
Despite the terrain, the coverage isn't too bad near the cache,
last time I took co-ordinates I had five sats with an external
antenna. Focus your search on the righthand side of the
rockfall.
The waypoint/geocache is nowhere near the edge for sane reasons.
Read the warning signs.
Terrain: Easy and hard. Flat walking tracks, large rocks
to make your way over. It is easy most of the way but requires
scrambling in places. There may be muddy patches on the track.
Risks: Beware of the following: -
- Don't go near the edge of the hole!
- Not reading warning signs!
- Bloodthirsty insects
- Icey roads in winter
- Rock ledges, shingle and rocks
- Shingle Roads
Good Luck!
