This cache is located in Chimney Rocks Park, off Rt. 36, south
of Hollidaysburg, PA. The entrance to the park is marked by a sign,
but it can be difficult to spot until you're right on top of it,
due to tall weed growth on the adjacent property. There is a nice
parking lot, restrooms and picnic facilities, so take the family
and enjoy the spectacular views from the lookout points. Permission
to place this cache was graciously granted by the Borough of
Hollidaysburg, with the following stipulations:
"...with the understanding that the participants do so at their
own risk, that participants heed all signage and do not access
areas that are off-limits to the public (eg. the quarry cliff face
or debris pile at the bottom of the quarry face, or in the lime
kiln) or that would present a hazard to those attempting to hide or
locate a geocache, and that the normal use of the park by the
public is not interrupted or disturbed by these activities."
This is a beautiful landmark, a long-time favorite hiking spot
of ours, made accessible to more people by the construction of the
park, and it is our hope that our fellow geocachers will respect
the Borough's instructions and will actually improve the park's
condition by participating in "Cache In, Trash Out".
Although the first part of the hike is a little steep, the rest
of it is a pleasant walk through beautiful scenery, with
breathtaking vistas from the lookout points along the way. We've
designated the lookouts Lower (N 40° 25.170' W 078° 23.296'
Elevation 1254 ft), Middle (N 40° 25.156' W 078° 23.198'
Elevation 1349 ft), and Upper (N 40° 25.238' W 078° 23.162'
Elevation 1396 ft).
Parking lot coordinates N 40° 25.102' W 078° 23.214'
Elevation 1239 ft.
One last thought...remember, these GPS units are not accurate
and this involves some steep slopes. I would not send you up or
down one, so it is best to keep to the path.
2009-11-01: Cache container was replaced today with a large snap
lock painted green and black.
FYI...The park closes as dusk. Enjoy!!!
