Geocache Description:

The need for a break from this weeks' reality prompted this cache. Located in the Depot Hill Multiple Use Area in Poughquag, NY. The cache is hidden off of the Appalachian Trail.

If you have not driven through this area before I suggest coming in from the west end of Rt 216, from State Route 52. You will pass by the Stormville Airport which hosts a huge flea market each holiday weekend from Memorial Day to November.. great for filling the geocaching bag, but beware of traffic on those weekends especially memorial and labor day weekends.

Next you will pass Greenhaven Maximum security prison... reminding us we all have the freedom to do the right or the wrong thing. A Free society can not exist without accountability.

You may feel you have taken a wrong turn down the road and ended up in Kentucky as you pass Sugar Maple Farms where Thoroughbreds endure their captivity in style.

Keep an eye out for Depot Hill Rd on the right on a sharp curve after most of the farm has passed. Now known as Depot Hill Rd., the road leading to this MUA used to be called Negro Hill Rd. and this area was called Freemanville as far back as 1856, when Charles Freeman, an African American freed slave settled here and created a safe community for freed slaves to settle. One of the big but tragedy filled steps in our country's history of defining Freedom.

The hike in to the cache is not very long.. maybe a 1/4 of a mile or so, not too much elevation change but some picking through rocky, root laden trails. It is suggested to walk down the dirt road after the parking area to the Appalachian Trail but there are other trails that we have not explored yet so do whatever it is you do best, but keep in mind this is a Multiple Use Area so not recommended during hunting season.

I am late with doing my Patriot Shopping, I would have liked to have had this cache filled with red, white and blue but it contains a variety of paraphanalia from a free fun loving capitalistic society.... enjoy and feel free to add our colors with pride. Let's see if we can't fill that box up with pride!

Additional Hints (Encrypt)

The cache is hidden in a crevice in a rock covered by downed limbs and bark. There is a hefty pile of downed trees sitting on top of the rocks.
