Geocache Description:

Scenic walk along the Potomac River

Scene of a little known but very significant civil war battle that was instrumental in changing how the North fought the war. From Rt 7 in Leesburg VA take Rt 15 (Bypass 15) North about a mile or 2 and at a stop light turn RIGHT onto Battlefield Pkwy. Follow the red white and blue Virginia Civil War signs to a dirt road and the park.

We wanted to make this a bit more interesting than just walking thru the woods to a cache, so please bear with us. The hike will take about 90 minutes depending on how long you take with the scenery and historic markers. This is a heavily wooded area so once the trees leaf out reception may be tough.

From the parking lot proceed to N39 07.919 W77 31.790 & follow the trail to a bench overlooking the Potomac River and Maryland. Continue following the trail along the bluff/river to the sign about the 20th Massachusetts Infantry. Subtract 0.117N & 0.016W from your current position to get to your next spot – a marker about a Confederate position.

From this sign position add 0.017N & 0.154W to reach your second Confederate position. From this position add 0.026N & subtract 0.009W to reach the cache. You will need to leave the trail at this point. The cache is under the root ball of a tree that has blown over, about 75 paces off of the trail. The cache is in a clear rectangular tupperware container with a tan top.

After the cache you can easily return to the parking lot but we suggest finishing up by visiting one of the smallest US National Cemeteries at N39 07.908 W77 31.664, a short 5 minute walk. We have added a few photo's from the cache. Unfortunately the camera got wet and ruined a lot of the film. Hopefully we will get some summer photo's to add as well.
