Geocache Description:

Due to the nature of the site and the geographic area this will be a virtual cache

Charlie George was a trapper who plied his trade in the Cascades of Central Oregon. In Jan of 1925 Charlie left his home on Tumalo Creek to check his trap line. He had four cabins that he used on his line. The first one was located near the "Big Slide" above Tumalo Creek. His second was at Crater Ditch, the third near Sparks Lake and the last was at Elk Lake.
He never made it to his second cabin.
In late Feb of 1925 a search party made up off some trapper friends attempted a search without results. Contrary to the plaque at the grave site his remains weren't found until 1929. His remains were found near the Crater Ditch cabin and buried at this site.
The remains of the cabin are located close by at;
44 03.158
121 41.034
The only items left are some of the base logs and pieces of mortar used in the foundation and log chinking.
To get to this area drive past Todd Lake on the 370 road. Past Todd Lake the road can be rough so a high clearance vehicle is a good idea. Turn at the 380 road towards the Broken Top Crater Trailhead. Just before the actual trailhead there is a spur road with a cable across it. Park near here but do not block the road. The grave site is less than a half mile through the woods.

To get credit for this cache, e-mail me with Charlie's age when he left for his last trip. (Available on the plaque)

This is a great area for hiking via trail or cross country.

I hope you enjoy this little known bit of Central Oregon history.
