Geocache Description:

Pretty flat until the end. Lots of walking on gravel. Waypoint 1: N 44 16.185 / W 69 47.252. Tracks are NOT active.

The old railroad between Hallowell and Gardiner is being converted into a bike/walking trail. Take a scenic hike from downtown Hallowell along the rails to a secret campground, where Benedict Arnold is rumored to have bivouacked. Along the way you will see many historic buildings, follow the tracks where 19th century steam trains used to thunder, and view the Kennebec River in its magnificent splendor. You can also get there by boat on the Kennebec.

This is about a 2.5 mile round-trip, with some easy bushwhacking. Start at the Municipal Parking Lot behind Slate’s Bakery on Water Street in Hallowell. Proceed W to Second Street and follow it S until the old tracks cross it. Follow the tracks S from there. Leave the tracks at waypoint 1. Follow the trail NE down to the campground and bushwhack to the coordinates from there.

Cache is an old ammo box with a blue ribbon on the handle. Originally contained: 3-Matchbox-type toys, 1-80’s mix CD, 1 can of Crocodile Pate’ (yes, really!),1-squirt gun, 2– P38 can openers.
