Plan 2 hours from nearest road.

Location: Central Kenya, East Africa

This is a virtual geocache. It consists only of marking on nearest tree (40 m to the south). Send an email with the tree marking text to hans-georg©michna.com (retype, don't copy) to be entered in the virtual geocache logbook.

To the best of my knowledge this is the first geocache placed where an integer meridian crosses the equator.

Due to the people who live in the area, it is not possible to actually stash away anything. Thus we also have the first virtual geocache now.

Approx. 40 m (meters) to the south of the meridian-equator crossing there is a tree.

I carved a short message into its bark on the northern side, easy to read. Whoever sends me an email to hans-georg©michna.com (retype, don't copy!) with the text of the marking will get entered into the virtual logbook for that stash and published here and on my Web site www.michna.com/gps/ and on anybody else's Web site who wants it.

A small hint—at first I went there the hard way, by pointing my jeep towards the point, off about 90° from the nearby main road, and driving straight towards it. It's only a few kilometers, but it took me hours of rather difficult driving including turning back once and crossing a river, where I had to drive through the water, then up a steep slope such that I was seriously worried about the jeep falling over backwards.

After finding the place, it turned out that there is at least one easier way to get there. Getting back to the road took me much less than an hour. A good map would help. So don't do it the hard way. The shortest way is not always the fastest.

Warning: The geocache is very difficult or impossible to reach by car when it has rained. Walking is not recommended either. It is relatively far and there are obstacles like a small river. If you want to walk nonetheless, take at least a stick with you. There are roaming farmers' dogs, not very dangerous, but they can be a nuisance.

I don't expect this virtual geocache to be found all too often, if ever.

2004-11-11 – I have to swallow my words—it's been found 4 times already!

Hans-Georg

p.s. As of 2006-09-27 there are already 8 log entries, but not all of the people have found the actual cache. Some only drove by on the road. This is still nice. Finding the cache is a little more involved.

When you visit the location, please do not add any additional carvings or make this carving deeper.

I enjoyed the trip to the Rift Valley and seeing that magnificent, breathtaking area in 1975. Too bad geocaching had not begun at that time.

Traveled the entire length of the Great Rift Valley with Njambi Tours of Nairobi Kenya. Went through this section on 20 Sept. This certainly is a very scenic place.

Today at 1.22 pm local time [1022UTC] I crossed the Equator first time in my life from south to north.
This happend only 4 kilometers west of GC "Rift Valley". Maybe I will come back another time to do also these 8 km hike to "36° East Meridian Tree". Thank you for the cache!
The TBG2EP "Munich s'ports the rainbow: Montreal" was also with me as you can see it on one of my pictures.

I have edited the cache page to add the following text:
"When you visit the location, please do not add any additional carvings or make this carving deeper."

I have allowed this historical cache to remain since the carving was made and the cache was listed very early in the sport, before geocaching.com became a website. The geocaching community has since learned defacing natural or man made objects is unacceptable and caches of this sort will not be listed.

Please do not add additional markings or mark additional trees in this area.

Thanks for the cooperation!

Happy Geocaching!
Hydee
