August 1, 2009 by LUCKYSTRIKE1 (2342 found) #2100 After 3 1/2 years of geocaching I finally made it to this cache. I brought my cousin with me today so we could find the La Luz Mine, which we eventually found with some help. We hiked the Crest Spur Trail to the La Luz Trail down to the cache. When we left we took the Old La Luz Trail from the cache up to the mine. My GPSr took us to a spot where some folks were repelling. It was around 100 ft. from the mine entrance. They knew where it was and told us how to get there. We picked a great N.M. summer day to find this cache. We found the mine but my flashlight wasn't working because I forgot to change the batteries before I left, daaaaaa!!! Then my cousin suggested that I use the light from my camera, which actually worked out well. We explored the whole mine and saw where it drops off at the end of the tunnel to the left. It's always nice to find these old caches and especially one by mouser. Thanks for placing this cache, Mouser (RIP)

June 2, 2009 by ClarksJeepn (233 found) Ran across this information while researching mining in the Sandias. In 1887, Juan Nieto and a partner opened a mine near the crest, below the present crest house, where they worked minor deposits of fluorite, galena, lead, silver, and small amounts of gold and copper. They hauled tools and supplies up a trail that later became the old La Luz Trail. Colonel Bernard Ruppe bought the claim in 1907 and the mine briefly was called the Ruppe mine, but it became the La Luz Mine, taking the name of the trail. Some people have said this was because the lights of Albuquerque and those of the mine cabin were mutually visible, but also the name possibly honors Nuestra Senora de la Luz, “Our Lady of the Light,” one of several names for the Virgin Mary.
