The Past the Trash Cache is on the favorite trail of a friend of mine. One day while he was out hiking, he saw a huge mess left by a bunch of inconsiderate people. So he went back and picked up all of the trash, AND left a garbage can in its place. Apparently, the trash can didn't last long, but the trash is gone too! Passing through the area will be rewarded by a great view when you reach your final destination! Please plan accordingly for a hike.
This cache is located in the Lower Paugussett State Forest, in Newtown, off of the Zoar Trail. From I-84 headed east, take exit 11. Take a right off of the exit, and another right onto Route 34. Stay on 34, and turn left onto Great Quarter Road. If you see Route 111, or go over the Stevenson Dam, you have gone too far! Parking is at the end of Great Quarter Road, and that is where you will conveniently find the trailhead. The cache is in a large ammo box.
Note to those of you with small children: This trail does go alongside a large body of water. There are some rocks, and one spot where the trail gets fairly close to the edge of a steep bank. The terrain could be difficult if there was a lot of snow on the ground.
