This cache has been archived.

bazzle: Been a good run. But since I live 1300 miles away it is unlikely this will be replaced any time soon. Take care.

Geocache Description:

This is a fun climb up a red rock pyramid, with great views of Cathedral Rock and the surrounding valley.

This is not a cache for everyone. Those with a fear of heights may not want to attempt it. I have that fear myself, but not too bad. There are no sheer drops, it is only a matter of height, the hike goes from about 4096 feet to about 4477 feet. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes and carry plenty of water. A good hiking stick may be useful as well as snacks for a break at the top. From the parking location at N 34 50.093 x W 111 49.100 (look for a pull out on Upper Red Rock Loop with several large boulders in it) my route up was 0.6 miles. This is scrambling up the slick rock and a little zigzag near the top. If you follow the wash up to the ridge, it is an easier climb and the route is about 0.9 miles. I went up the slick rock and down the ridge, my total route was 1.5 miles that took about an hour round trip. From the top you will have some great views of the area that many never see. The path of those that have gone before is not hard to see. If you take little ones, keep a close eye on them up here! Also be sure you have your Red Rock Pass, as one is required to park here.

Once you make the top you are looking for an ammo can. Locals visit this place, so the cache is well hidden. Please be sure to hide it as well when you are done.

** UPDATE 2/20/2006 - New Coordinates **
Turns out my original location, out on the point of the pyramid, was on an official, though unmarked, archeological site. It REALLY was a Sinagua dwelling site. Thanx to the thoughtful and very helpful assistance of a couple of USFS site stewards the cache has been relocated to a safe spot close to the original location but away from the archeological site that should be protected. The parking location is the same, but the route up is different. I have a couple pics I will post once they are scanned. The current pics are from the old location, you can still enjoy this view as well. Enjoy the hike and the new view.
