Geocache Description:

Paddle with your caching pals to the top of one of BC's most beautiful fjords.

This is an overnight event cache that will take place on the 20th and 21st of September, 2003. We will be departing from Deep Cove at 9:30 AM sharp on Saturday -- be sure to arrive early to pack your gear. To log this cache, you must make the trip to the top of Indian Arm to Granite Falls. This event is open to all cachers who wish to attend.

The cache coordinates will take you to the put in location in front of the Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak rental shop.

Get ready to enjoy a terrific paddling adventure as we tour the sheltered waters of Indian Arm. The 40 km (25 mile) return trip will take us to a number of caches and several interesting historic and scenic locations on the arm:

SATURDAY -- the trip to Granite Falls from Deep Cove

Viewpoint 1: -- Cozy Cove -- this is a little known spot for viewing harbour seals. There is a small log boom to the south of the last house where seals hang out. Please keep your distance so that we don't frighten them.

Stop 1: -- Blood Beach -- the first cache hunt of the trip. We'll visit the famed beach where Putrid Pete the Pirate fought a bloody battle with Captain Flint and his crew. If you look carefully, you might even see the reflection of Rotten Robert McFallon in the water near Skeleton Island.

Stop 2: -- Long John's Hideaway -- a cache on an island. Locate the booty left by Long John Silver after he parted ways with with Captain Smollett. Watch for sea stars near the cove at the north end of the island.

Stop 3: -- Treasure Island -- There's treasure to be found on this beautiful island oasis. But you'll have to walk the plank to find it...

Viewpoint 2: -- Buntzen 2 Power Station -- Get your cameras out for this gothic style generating station that was built in the early 1900s. Water is brought down through three huge pipes from Buntzen Lake, 160 meters (520 feet) above.

Stop 4: -- Oooh, I Can Thwayte -- The halfway point to the top of the arm (some might refer to it as the elbow of Indian Arm). We'll stop here to find a cache and have lunch.

Viewpoint 3: -- Silver Falls -- This waterfall is absolutely gorgeous. And to make it even better, we can play around for a while in the outflow while marvelling at the abundance of marine life in the area.

Stop 5: -- Kayak Beyond the Silent Reasonings of Jellyfish -- We'll stop at Berg's Landing to find the nearby cache that is a tribute to the thousands of jellyfish found in Indian Arm at certain times of the year.

Stop 6: -- Tsleil-Waututh -- This cache was named after the native Indian people that once lived on the shores of Indian Arm. We'll even teach you how to pronounce the name correctly.

Stop 7: -- Kayakers Paradise -- Our final cache of the day and our destination for the night -- a beautiful campsite at the base of the 50 meter (165 ft) high Granite Falls.

SUNDAY -- return to Deep Cove

What are you looking at?Viewpoint 4: -- Indian River Estuary -- If the Pink Salmon are still running we should be able to see them swimming underneath our kayaks (there is a run of 60,000 fish each odd numbered year).

Viewpoint 5: -- Wigwam Inn -- The very famous resort located at the extreme top of the arm. The inn is owned by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and is private property. Although they have flush toilets there, we're not allowed to use them.

Viewpoint 6: -- The Deepest Spot in the Arm -- As we cross over the arm from Buntzen Bay to Thwaytes Landing, we'll be paddling across water that is 219 meters (720 ft) deep. Not a good spot to drop your sunglasses.

Stop 8: -- Thwaytes Landing -- we'll stop for a rest and lunch before continuing on towards Deep Cove.

Viewpoint 7: -- Danger Bay -- The real name is Lone Rock Point but locals call it Danger Bay, after the TV series of the same name that was filmed at this location.

Stop 9: -- Deep Cove -- The end of our journey. Go home and log your finds.

Please note that you are responsible for all of your own equipment including, tent, sleeping bag, kayak, and all other related gear.

If you've never been kayaking before but would still like to come along, we'll set you up with someone else in a double kayak (they're much more stable) -- we've got a number of experienced paddlers going who will explain water safety and show you how to enter and exit the kayak, paddle, etc.

For additional information about this event, including a map, and information about kayak rentals, meals, etc., please see the Canada Forums post titled "Event Cache: Kayak Trip to Indian Arm" or contact Jomarac5 through this website.

We hope that you'll join us for what will no doubt be a very exciting cache event!
