«Wherever I gazed, I was surrounded by the Nordic melancholy
splendour».
That is the classic description of the view from this mountain farm
given by
Bernhard
Herre, a somewhat obscure author who died in 1849 at the age of
37.
However, his powerful description of Norwegian nature and
encounters with innocent farm girls minding their cattle at
this very
spot is considered the opening lines of national romanticism in
Norwegian literature. Bernhard also was a true pioneer of
modern-day hiking, being the first urban dweller to explore the
hills above Oslo and write insightfully about them.
Today, there are no cowgirls around, but the mountain farm area
("setervang") is still nice and open with several old buildings,
some cabins and the foundations of the original place. The views
are great and the melancholy splendour certainly prevails.
