Geocache Description:

You will love this Nature Park. Before you go, visit www.naturalsciencesacademy.org and take a look at the maps and trail guides. *** Please note: This park is only open to the public from Dawn to Dusk on Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays ; and from Noon to Dusk Monday through Friday. Plan your trip accordingly.

This cache has been approved by the management of this park.

Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy was founded in 1996 in response to a critical need in the community for leadership in natural resources management and environmental education. The Academy’s work began with helping solve Augusta’s recurring violation of the city’s wastewater permit limits by its involvement in a constructed wetlands complex for tertiary treatment of municipal wastewater. (That’s right, the manmade wetlands at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park actually treat the water in a natural way, with no pumps, and no electricity!) The Academy not only restored the highly degraded Phinizy Swamp to an urban park and tourist attraction, but it developed award-winning education programs and conducted ambitious, yet relevant restoration and water quality research.

Park at N 33° 23.095 W 081° 58.034. You'll be fooled by your GPS as you drive up to the site, do not bushwhack!

You'll have to hike (or bike) about 1.01 miles to get to this cache. Walking is good because this is a very scenic trail, with a lots of literature to read on the way, and a lot to see. In fact, you may have to sit and rest on the numerous benches just to keep up with the reading materials that are supplied throughout the trail. But, if you bike you can cover more of the extensive miles of trails, especially around the man-made marshes. Either way, watch out for the roots in the wooded sections.

From the parking lot (at N 33° 23.095 W 081° 58.034)head towards the silos to pick up the trail. And when you get to the fork in the trail, the green trail is a little shorter, but they'll both get you to the cache.

After the cache find, if you have time, instead of backtracking, go ahead and follow the trail on around the park clockwise. It is a fascinating place. It's about an hour walk.

Enjoy.
