Fire watch tower 1 mile up from the parking area at about 2961 feet.
This cache is located at a point on the Big Savage Mountain called High Rock. It offers a spectacular 360 degree view. The remains of an old fire watch dwelling are located there, check out the steps chiseled into the rock in front of it. A more recent fire watch tower exists. This is NOT a cache to attempt when there is snow on the ground. Bring warm clothing if you do go to the site in the winter months.

If you have a good pair of binoculars, you can pick out the Mt. Davis high point.

This cache is an ammo box. It initially contained:

  • carabiner
  • handwarmers
  • log book and pencils
  • dice
  • headphones
Driving Directions:
Savage River road from Rt 135
or
Rt 495 to Melinger Rd; Melinger rd. to Spring Lick rd;
Spring lick rd to Savage River rd; left on Savage River rd to Westernport rd.
or
Rt 495 to Dry Run rd; Dry Run rd to Savage River rd; left on Savage River rd to Westernport rd.

The objective is to get on the Savage River rd and proceed NW of the Savage River dam until the Savage River rd terminates at Westernport rd. When you pass Big Run State Park, you still have 6.3 miles to Westernport rd. Turn right on Westernport rd and travel 5.2 miles to a pull-off area where there are yellow bar/gates on each side of the road. Proceed uphill about a mile to the tower.

Nice clear view from the tower! Didn't have any trouble finding the cache using the coordinates, but we never did see the downed pine that was mentioned. Maybe it's been cut up & removed? Took red bouncy ball. Left purple lighter, Canadian dime & crab card.

I was here to check out the view from the tower and found that there was a cache near the tower so I killed two birds with one stone.

Found this afternoon with alrightandy and my cousin who is a self proclaimed 5/5 finder. Awesome view on a crystal clear day. TFTH.
