Geocache Description:

A short multi in the grounds of Greyfriars, once the site of the monastery of the Franciscan monks. This multi points out the unusual old stones. Cache is a black 35ml film container. Please bring your own pencil.

Please note only open between the hours:

MON - SAT 10.00 - 16.00
SUNDAY 12.00 - 16.00

Greyfriars is tucked away behind a high stone wall behind new flats, and you would walk right past without even noticing this peaceful place, very popular at lunchtime when people take their lunch and newspapers to read in its peaceful surroundings.

There are information boards around giving the history of the Greyfriars, so I won't bore you too much with a long page.

There are two gateways, one old one by the car park, and a new side gate, which depicts some of the carvings on the stones.

From one of the gateways, make your way over to the wooden canopy. (You can see it without the waypoint). Here 13 sculptured stones are protected from the elements.

9 stones are still standing,
3 laid flat
1 very old one fastened to the wall.

Another information board here explains more about these stones.

Take a good look at the engravings on the stones to answer the following questions.

A. Looking on all 13 stones, how many STONES have a LARGE SAILING SHIP?

B. Looking on all the 13 stones, how many STONES have a BOY KNEELING?

C. Find the upright stone of the wigmaker - red sandstone - on the west side there are three numbers which are the same. What is this number?

D. Looking on all the 9 upright stones, how many HORSES can you see?

E. Looking on all the 9 upright stones, how many STONES have complete SKELETONS on them?

F. Looking at the information board under 'D'. "Many stones were taken in 1#59 to build Cromwel's Citadel on the south inch". Find the missing number.

G. Still reading the information board. "These 13 stones have been conserved and brought under cover. They include the oldest stone in Greyfriars (Buchan 1#80)". Find the missing number.
