Geocache Description:

A short multi taking you to the older part of Perth station. Dependant upon your approach, you may have stairs to climb to cross the lines/platforms.

There were originally two railway stations in Perth, this one - Perth General Station and Princess street station which served the Dundee/Fife line.

The Princess street station was later linked to the main station, closed and fell into disrepair. Its platform can still be seen as you pass on the train, or by looking up behind the hairdressers and modern flats on the south corner of Princess street.

The General station was built to the designs of William Tite of London in 1847-8. finally linking Perth to the national network of railways.

By the start of the 20th century, Perth was the junction for three railway companies: the Caledonian to Glasgow, Crieff, Dundee and Aberdeen; the North British to Edinburgh and Fife; and the Highland to Inverness. In 1923 the Caledonian and Highland were absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, while the North British was absorbed into the London and North Eastern Railway.

The station was originally a lot larger, having lots of sidings where the Leisure Pool now stands. Large Engine sheds were near the Friarton tunnel, and a there was a large turntable where Tesco's in the Edinburgh road now stands.

OK, thats enough history for you, on to the multi.

As you enter the station by the main entrance you will notice the paintwork is in the purple colours of First Scotrail, but as you get towards the older parts, the colours change to brown and cream. On Platform 1 (or it might be 2) there are some train paintings at the stairs, one was painted by a junior PP.

Take a walk over to Platform 5/6 and look along the wall for the old clock, and answer the following questions.

A. How many clock faces are there?

B and C The clock is over a bay window, how many panes of glass are there?

D. The clock was made by Jas __________ & Son, Edinburgh. How many letters in the surname of the clockmaker?

E. Above the arch to the left of the clock is a yellow sign with a black letter 'H' on it, what number is missing .... 3/1/?

F. With your back to the clock, what platform are you on?

G. Go through the arch to the left of the clock to the next platform, where there is another clock. How many faces are on this clock?
