The Battle of Halidon Hilll was one of many bloody border battles between the English and the Scots. The Scots army, led by Lord Douglas, attacked uphill against the English army led by Edward III. The Scots suffered heavy casualties from the English archers and then from an English cavalry charge, reputedly led by Edward III himself. In the defeat, over 4000 Scots including Lord Douglas were killed and the supremacy of the English longbow was established.
A track leads from near the cache across the site of the battle.
