Il “Sass Cavalàsc” (Sasso Cavallaccio) è un colossale masso erratico che si trova sulla sponda del Verbano, nel Comune di Ranco (visit link) in prossimità del confine con Ispra. Le leggende narrano che i massi erratici sono stati trasportati nella loro sede attuale da antichi giganti o anche il diavolo in persona. In questa zona questi colossi abbondano intorno a Ranco, Angera, Sesto Calende, Lentate, Barza e Ispra.
A capo di questi massi sta il celebre “Sass Cavalàsc”, ben noto anche a geologi stranieri, descritto per la prima volta da Antonio Stoppani, letterato e naturalista del secolo scorso. E’ di serpentino come lo sono pure molti altri della zona. Essi facevano parte di una colossale frana che, arrestata sulla superficie del ghiacciaio in seno alle Alpi, forse nella zona dei Gottardo, venne poi a sparpagliarsi nella zona sopra descritta.
Alla base del lato che guarda verso il lago si nota un piccolo mulino o “marmitta dei giganti”, creata dall'azione sulla roccia di un vortice di acqua e di ciottoli. Per la maggior parte dell'anno, il basamento del masso con la marmitta è immerso nel lago.

“Sass Cavalàsc” is a huge boulder that is located on the shore of Lake Maggiore, in the Ranco Comune (visit link) near the border with Ispra. Its name Sasso Cavallaccio (literally Bad Horse Rock) is due to its semblance to a horse’s head. Legend has it that the boulders were transported to their present location by ancient giants or the devil himself. In this area these huge boulders can be found around Ranco, Angera Sixth Calende, Lens, Barza and Ispra.
At the head of these boulders is the famous "Sass Cavalàsc", well known to foreign geologists, and described for the first time by Antonio Stoppani, writer and naturalist of the last century. It is serpentine as are also many others in the area. They were part of a massive landslide that stopped on the surface of the glacier in the Alps, perhaps in the Gotthard area, was then scattered across the area described above.
At the base of the rock on the side that faces the lake, you can find a small glacier mill or "giant’s pot" created by the action of a vortex of water and pebbles. For most of the year, the exposed base of the boulder is underwater.
