Geocache Description:

A short walk from the car park to the memorial.
You will have to use your imagination to see any 'Flying Boats'.

Don't waste your time looking for a 'runway'.
This was a 'Flying Boat' base.

The bay was used by flying boats as early as 1933, then in 1937 a fuel depot was established on the Island of Kerrera as an emergency fuelling stop for RAF aircraft flying round the coast.

In 1938 209 Sqdn had a detached flight based here taking part in 'Convoy Protection' exercises, operating Supermarine Stranraers.

The decision was then made to develop Oban into an operational Flying Boat Base, accordingly building works commenced on an aircraft servicing area, including a new slip and jetty at Ardentrive Bay on the Island of Kerrera.

First to arrive was 209 Sqdn equipped with Saro Lerwick Flying Boats. Not a great success this aircraft, soon replaced by 210 Sqdn, equipped with Short Sunderlands.

Another Flying Boat Base, where maintenance and training was carried out was built at Ganavan Sands, consisting of a hanger and severel engineering sheds. This was a base for 302 Sqdn Ferry Training Unit.

By April 1941 the Sunderland had mostly been superceded by the Consolidated Catalina Flying Boat.

Oban War and Peace Museum contains information and displays, including a large model 'Flying Boat'.
