Geocache Description:

This cache comes complete with its own WC, bus stop and post box. Once refreshed it’s possible to continue on up the road a small way to visit the Skye Museum of Island Life with its traditional thatched cottages, which give you a very real flavour of what it was like to live in a crofting community around the turn of the 19th century. It’s open from Easter until October.

Beyond the Museum, it is a reasonably short walk to Flora MacDonald’s grave and memorial. Flora MacDonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie avoid capture as he fled from the Hanoverians after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Dressing him as her maid, Flora helped him to escape to Skye (immortalised in the Skye Boat Song), for which she was imprisoned, including a short stay at the Tower of London. She died in 1790, and is buried here at the cemetery in Kilmuir. In 1880 a large Celtic cross was erected as a memorial to mark her grave.

Off the A855, and signed for the Skye Museum of Island Life. Parking is by the WC - or up at the museum, but only if you plan on visiting the museum.

It’s worth pointing out that the WC is no longer maintained by the Council and the only way it can stay open is if everyone making use of the facility makes a donation.

Please bring your own pen.

***A kind colleague is going to do some maintenance over the Easter break***
