A microcache at a rather strange sculpture...
Don't we find the most interesting things when we take a wrong turn somewhere?
Huge concrete tusks, covered in carvings depicting the history of Dundee. Whalers would often wait for days before sighting a whale, and they would spend many hours carving designs into ivory - a pastime called "scrimshaw", which is also a surname closely related to Scrimgeour. You can see some original scrimshaw carvings at Dundee's beautiful McManus gallery.
The scrimshaw on these tusks depicts good Scottish customs such as Oor Wullie, the Dundee railway line, and a map of the Angus Glens - specifically mentioning Glen Clova, where we had a fabulous Geocaching Event in 2012 hosted by Team Clova. Also a coat of arms, a Celtic cross, ships and rope amongst many others.
I have no idea why these tusks are here, who made them, or how old they are. So if anyone can give further information I'll update the cache description and credit you :)
Cache is a small plastic green micro only containing a logbook. Please take your own pencil.
Site is wheelchair friendly depending on mud and leaves on the path, and the cache is within reach of a wheelchair user.
