Geocache Description:

The Myth of Bellerophon and Chimaira

The monster Chimaira is some kind of dragon. Its head looks like a lion, the body like a goat and the tail is a snake. Out of its mouth flames were blowing. Chimaira lived in the mountains nearby Olympos and destroyed the region Lykia. Bellerophon was in exile in Lykia and the Lykian King ordered him to fight against Chimaira. Riding his winged horse Pegasus, Bellerophon began the fight. But Chimaira striked back and Pegasus went up in the air. Coming down, Bellerophon smashed with his lance Chimaira under the ground. So we still can see till nowadays the flames coming out of Chimaira`s mouth from underneath the ground. The people of the region wanted to celebrate the victory of Bellerophon and arranged a race. The athletes burned their torches with Chimaira`s flames coming out of the ground and started to run towards the city of Olympos. So this was the first "Olympic Game" in Anatolia.
And the Olympic Flame from today still remains to the eternal flame of Chimaira ...

Now on the cache: It is hidden not far away from the eternal flames of Chimaira. You can go there by feet. The cache starts with:

  • - Logbook, pencil and stashnote
    - walnut
    - a transparent self- adhesive tape
    - shoe-laces
    - painter`s colour
    - thermometer
    - fish
    - glass stone
    - rattle
    - four feet alien
    - 1 German pfennig
    - 10 Austrian groschen
    - 10 French centimes

Small note on cache maintenance: Nazbeg will check the Cache like others there. And we informed the owner of other caches at the Turkish Riviera about it. A German-Turkish family is just right now building a house not far away from the location and they are planning to live there ... They will also control the cache. So we think, the cache will not end as "geolitter".

Perhaps the cache has disappeared... We placed the cache in November 2004, and at that time it was the thirtieth cache in Turkey. Since then, we have maintained and renewed the cache several times. We would now like to ask the next visitors to place a new cache with a logbook so that this “old” cache can remain in place for a while longer. Thank you very much!

September 2025: Our heartfelt thanks for a new container go out to Chief501! The cache may live on.
