The party leaves the Shire through a secret gate in the hedge separating the old forest and the shire and head for the east road and the Prancing Pony. As they travel through the forest they become lost and travel far off track eastward and end up at the Withywindle River and begin following a trail along the river. As they journey up the river sleep begins to creep over them and they lay down under a large tree along the river bank. While they sleep beneath the tree it wakes up to take revenge. Sam wakes up and stumbles away from the tree in time to see Frodo face down in the river with a branch holding him under and Merry and Pippin being pulled into the ground by the tree roots.
Hey! Come derry dol! Hop, along, my hearties! Hobbits! Ponies all! We are fond of parties. Now let the fun begin! Let us sing together! @ JRR Tolkien
