Geocache Description:

Enjoy this easy multi-cache while you are visiting the marvellous ancient city of Sagalassos. The cache is only accessible during opening hours of the site. There is an entrance fee. Due to the remote location, this is a self-maintenance cache, and free for “adoption” by a local geocacher...

New Cache Formula as from 3 Mai 2015

The New Pilgrims are all those tourists coming from remote countries for visiting the cities of their ancestors. The New Pilgrims are those Belgian archeologists and scientists: they come to this place every summer period excavating new parts of this city. The New Pilgrims are all the thousands persons (like myself) who came to Turkey on the 29th of March 2006 to catch a glimpse of the total solar Eclipse. At this occasion this cache was established.

In antiquity, Sagalassos was the second major city of Pisidia, after Antioch and Pisidia. At present, its excavations form by far the most impressive archeological site of ancient Pisidia. Sagalassos was founded by the Pisidians, a tribe who liked cities high on the hills. The ruins of Sagalassos lie on the southern flank of the mount Ak Dağ at a height of 1500 meter. Most of the site dates from the Roman Imperial Period. Sagalassos was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian expedition. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-Belgian team. In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian excavation project by the permission of the Turkish Ministry of Culture. M. Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium) is the leader of the interdisciplinary archaeological and scientific research group.

Thanks to its remoteness and its altitude, Sagalassos is one of the best preserved antique cities, with rich architectural and sculptural remains dating from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD. Make sure you take a look at the late Hellenistic fountain house or Nymphaea, which is stlll functional. You can also spent a visit to the Sagalassos museum in the town of Burdur.

Small note on cache maintenance: Nazbeg volunteered to check the cache if necessary. And we inform the regular Belgian visitors of the Sagalassos site to contact the owner before travelling other there. So we think, the cache will not end as "geolitter".
