This section of the coastline has many archaeological remains, and Skateraw is no exception. Both prehistoric and early Christian burials have been found in this area. The juxtaposition of a restored 19th century limekiln next to Torness Power Station is rather surreal. Tonnes Nuclear Power Station was built in the 1980s. It uses two advanced gas-cooled reactors, and produces over 1,200 megawatts of electricity. Limestone is still quarried at the nearby cement works. The lime from this kiln was shipped from the small harbour and was used to neutralise soil in farming.
Skateraw is recognised by birdwatchers as one of the premier sites for migrants in East Lothian and 42 different species have, apparently, been seen here. On the road between Skateraw and Barn's Ness, is a 9000 sq ft grain store on Skateraw farm, which provided a temporary home for Richard Demarco's extensive art archive.
