Geocache Description:

The Balgarthno Stone Circle is in a sorry state given that it is a scheduled ancient monument. It measures 6.1m in diameter and the area of schedule has recently been extended to 40m round the site and a (ineffectual) fence has been placed round it.
Parking in Myrekirk Road - see co-ords, it is a flat walk to the site. There have been rumours and counter rumours for years about Asda buying the field next to it and even incorporating the site into yet another mega-development. ???

Balgarthno means 'Garthnait's Farm'. The area here has been farmed for many hundreds of years and Garthnait is a Pictish name adopted by gaelic speakers in the early mediaeval period.
The circle is referred to as a druidical temple on the Ordnance Survey map of 1870. This came from the mistaken belief that it served as a place of judgement in the Iron Age. In the 19th and 20th century, stones cleared from the nearby fields were dumped here. The site was scheduled in 1935 but since then the local Angus tribes have decimated the area. It is a form of monument rarely seen in Tayside due to its mainly recumbent stones and it is the most southerly example of its type.
