Backmuir Wood
Backmuir Wood was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 1996 and since
then has become a very popular area with dog walkers – so watch out
for muggles!
The wood is comprised of a variety of broadleaved and conifer
trees, such as Beech, Oak, Silver Birch, Norwegian Spruce and Scots
Pine. In 2000 the wood was expanded by the purchase of a new area
just to the north west of the suggest parking coordinates. This
area, known as the Millennium Corner, has been planted with native
tree species – mostly Scots pine.
Auld Alex
Auld Alex was a man who loved Backmuir Wood. Everyday, he walked to
its most north westerly point and sat to enjoy the view across to
the Carse of Gowrie on one side, and the Sidlaw Hills on the other.
Alex died a few years ago, aged 86. In his memory, a seat has been
erected where he used to sit and enjoy the view.
The Cache
The wood covers an area of over 120 acres and contains
approximately 6.5km of paths to explore on the way to the cache!
However, the shortest route from the parking area to the cache
location is roughly a 2 miles round trip.
From the car park go through the main gate (to the east of the
car park) and follow the path. When the path forks take the left
branch and follow this up to the cache. For a longer route try
taking the right hand branch and chance your luck with the many
criss crossing paths within the wood.
This cache has been placed near Auld Alex's seat. After visiting
the cache, please feel free to sit for a while and enjoy the views
before making your return journey.
