This cache is a natural complement to Penmanshiel
Wood(GCZYEB).
The site is a memorial to the tragic event of Saturday 17 March
1979 when the Penmanshiel Tunnel collapsed and two workmen were
killed. The tunnel had originally been constructed in the 1840’s
but work was in progress to enlarge the tunnel so that new rolling
stock could be used on this important route. Following the
collapse, the main east coast railway line between Edinburgh and
London was closed for five months. It was eventually decided to
abandon the tunnel and construct a cutting round the base of the
hill.
The cache container was changed, 4 April 2008, to a 75 ml pill
container which should be less likely to disappear under the
rain-washed dirt.
