The Series:
There are ten caches in this series. Each cache contains
one-tenth of a $10,000 bill with a number on it. When you visit
each cache, note the location of the bill segment and the number on
the bill. Use these ten numbers to find the final cache!
A bit of history - Lee's 9000th cache:
I was with Lee when he scored his 9,000th cache, but it almost
didn't happen!
Ben (bthomas), Lee and I decided to do a road trip from Florida to
California and grab a few caches along the way. During the
ten day trip, the few caches became more than 600 as we
drove, cached, ate and occasionally slept.
We knew that cache number 9,000 was looming and while looking at
the route ahead of us, Ben got the great idea that TeamAlamo
should grab the the 9k cache at The Alamo when we passed
through San Antonio. The great news was that we found the perfect
cache,
13 days in 30 seconds, a webcam cache located at the
Alamo and the timing was going to be on the money!
As we rolled into San Antonio with Lee at the
wheel, I crafted a lousy "#9000" sign on a piece of binder
paper with a Sharpie. (By the way, Lee's years of training as
a NYC cabbie have made him the best geocaching wheelman
in the business.)
When we got to the Alamo, we were depressed to find that the
webcam was not working! We searched a bit and located the cam in a
second floor window above a gift shop across the street from the
Alamo. Lee entered the shop and asked what was up with the camera
and suggested (actually insisted) that we be allowed to go upstairs
and fix it. No dice!
We were told that the camera was owned by the local newpaper
publisher and had nothing to do with the gift shop. Lee got on the
phone with walruz in California and asked him to work the phones in
San Antonio and try to get the newspaper guys to fix the camera so
they wouldn't miss this great moment in history. Walruz gave it his
best, but the news moguls of San Antonio were content to sit on a
bum camera and let history pass them by.
Our backup plan was to take a regular digital camera picture and
somehow convince the cache owner to accept it. We took the picture,
submitted our find, and were promptly rejected. Lee went into an
email frenzy and argued, cajoled and begged the guy for a one time
papal dispensation for historic #9000. It was a masterpiece of
writing and after three or four email exchanges the guy finally
relented and let us post
Lee's #9000!
Just another day of caching with my buddy Lee!

NOTE: The cache is not at the coordinates
listed above!
The above coordinates will take you to a Big Lots store,
since I think ten thousand is a big lot of anything.
This cache will help you get a feel for just how big ten
thousand is!
Follow this link. When you
return, you'll have the correct coordinates for this cache and
you'll know that ten thousand is a lot of anything.
Once you have the coordinates, finding this Altoids tin should be
easy. Free 20-minute parking is nearby and the location will give
you some cover to search most times of day. Try to avoid early
mornings and afternoons when kids might be travelling to or from
school. It's and easy, uninspired hide -- but you'll need a break
after your workout finding the coordinates. Bring a pen, sign the
log and take note of the number on the puzzle piece. The puzzle
piece must stay in the cache!
