Gollinrod Gorge. Traditional Cache

This is a small geocache located in the Gollinrod Gorge - a part of the River Irwell that lies between Ramsbottom and Summerseat.
Gollinrod Gorge is one of those hidden places of Lancashire - a place where the Irwell Valley narrows to one of dramatic scenary and steep cliffs. On both sides there are steep slopes and cliffs. In the gorge the river begins to show a bit of white - and has a roar at times.
The cache is located in an area of the gorge - where it is at the most dramatic - the footpath is single width - and does have a drop to one side - so please be careful. At the cache location there are mossy rocks - which can be slippy so please be careful.
There are other caches in the area - such as the Lighting Tree - but please note there is NO DIRECT ROUTE from them to the cache - this is due to the CLIFFS AND STEEP SLOPES.
The gorge is surrounded by steep slopes and cliffs. Please do not try and access the cache directly, you will run into trouble due to the cliffs.
There are two access points down into the gorge. I have inluded the two access points as waypoints. One is via Brooksbottom / Summerseat. The other is from Ramsbottom.
The cache is best done in daylight - it would not be fun in the dark.
There are also relics of the industrial age in the gorge - one of these is a old channel - please be careful - as there is a shear drop to its bottom.
Due to the cliffs and steep slopes I would recommend accessing and exiting the gorge via the waypoints that I have indicated. By following the access routes - you will also get the best out of your visit - and see more of the gorge.
